Global Hiring Slowdown: What Aura’s Data Reveals About 2025 Labor Trends

Evan Sohn, CEO of Aura Intelligence, joined CNBC’s The Exchange today to break down Aura’s latest labor market findings—and his outlook is clear: the job market is in a turbulent phase, and the leading indicators aren’t looking great.

“The most troubling trend we’re seeing is in the functions that usually lead hiring—recruiting and HR,” Sohn explained. According to Aura’s Monthly 2025 Jobs Report, staffing and recruiting roles are down 28% year-over-year, and HR jobs have plunged over 40%. That’s not just noise—it’s a signal that businesses are preparing for leaner times ahead.

And it’s not isolated to the U.S. Aura’s data shows job postings fell across most global regions:

  • APAC: down 25%

  • LATAM: down 11%

  • EMEA: down 10%

  • North America: down 6%

The only bright spots globally? Canada and India posted slight gains, bucking the broader trend of contraction.

Evan also highlighted a shift in hiring geography. “In 2020, 92% of S&P 500 open jobs were in the U.S. Last month, that dropped to just 78%,” he said.  Lower labor costs and a widening global talent pool are reshaping corporate hiring strategies. It will be interesting to see how tariffs and changing policies alter these trends.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. One sector is hiring aggressively: AI-driven roles. Aura’s data shows a 52% increase in marketing jobs that require AI skills, with similar gains in the insurance and nonprofit sectors. It’s further evidence that AI isn’t just a buzzword—it’s reshaping job functions across the board.

If recruiting and HR roles are the canaries in the economic coal mine, Aura’s data suggests companies are getting ready to weather a rough patch.
